Ver 0.8 - Dark Reflections
Hi,
This update contains a new prologue, and Chapter 4 for Mike. John's & Charles' routes are not updated.
Normally, I'd love to have a long devlog with my feelings, things that have gone good or bad etc in an update.
This time however, the current censorship wave hitting my games has hit me harder than ever.
Distant Travels isn't vile or questionable, there is no rape or incest going on, there's nothing close to abuse.
Instead, it's a way for me to write about life and difficult topics that I have dealt with - depression, impostor syndrome and the like. All wrapped in a nice little dating sim package with a dash of sci-fi and some great art.
The main bright news I want to share is that I'm now working closer with a new sprite artist (tehngo!) as well as a new programmer who can assist me in some of the more advance features I like to add in (JamieDerg) as well as more art from Ven (Bweno / VenCefi).
These lovely people, amongst others (Lamb, Jake etc) who have encouraged me to keep my passion in the project are what has revived the project passion for me. I went from writing barely 20-30 words per day, to thousands per week with their motivation and help.
Truly, thank you all.
As for actual additions etc this time I'll keep it short, as I just don't have it in me to summon more passion that what is already in the build. No dev-log guides about shaders or the like.
In short:
- 67k new words (100k -> 167k)
- 15 or so new CGs
- A few new characters with full art.
- A bajillion fixes to highgfx/low gfx mode. Less flashing lights.
- A ton of graphical improvements with the introductions of GLSL shaders.
- A new prologue.
- A glossary function.
- New main menu.
- Fixes to the sprite gallery.
- A complete code rehaul (yup)
- A million other fixes and additions.
Just play it, it's quite great. Oh, and remember to speak out against censorship and stand for what you believe in.
On a side note for all the translators that have reached out in recent times who I have asked to wait - this is a good time to go about it. I won't be overhauling any older chapters in any significant ways from here on out.
As for translations themselves conditions are:
1) You must inform me of it's existence.
2) You cannot paywall it for longer than 1 week (7 days) after initial release. After that it must be made available for free.
3) You may not upload any copies of DT to itch.

Love this VN! I am just curious about some characters in the sprite menu that have an option to remove their jocks like Geralt and Watt. Will this only be implemented later?
Love the updates! Very enjoyable to replay these. Will Charles still be an option? I kind of like Max more. And I love Rex, I can fix him, I swear, give me a chance!
Mike, Charles and John will all be options. Next up after Mike is indeed Charles.
I am excited I've been seething for Charles content. Watching him ramble about all the sci-fi concepts in the game is cute af.
Looking at your post history, it's obvious you're transphobic - and it's sad to see it leak out like this.
I think if you can't have space in your heart for someone mentioning that they support trans rights, you need to reconsider your stance in life.
On that note, I don't think Distant Travels is for you.
Arctos is supposed to display a 'what if people stopped being completely intolerant for no reason and instead had other kinds of problems' world. A kind of nudge towards what normal thoughtlines in terms of respecting each other and living life should be, in my opinion.
A large part of this shows in the main character's thinking from the prologue - if you talk with Nick he starts thinking about his sexuality all there and then. It's in the part where you select a character name. You seem to have missed this point entirely. It's about giving another perspective on life, from the view of someone who's suffered a lot - in part due to people with views much like your own.
In short, I think you're blinded by misguided hate - and you need to check yourself. Transphobia has no place - just the same as homophobia or racism.
It's more likely than you think that you have someone you care about - someone closer than you can imaging, that's currently hiding themselves from you, because of how you're behaving. Let that sink in.
To put it in Mike Steel's words, to mimic my own thoughts:
"I think most people would be angry, not just offended, if someone told them that their friends and family didn't deserve the same rights as everyone else. Especially if it was because of something like their identity."
I reported him, Im not sure how a transphobic person got here... but it is clearly that they did not read at all, they only wanted to share hate..
Thanks! The reports go straight to me with how itch works - and I've decided to leave the post up to bring focus to the reply instead, and make the stance I take on transphobia in my community very clear.
This visual novel is really good. Having an update is amazing! It shows that it is made with lots of love.
Super glad for the update, I am starting again and the intro is super interesting.
The new chapter with Mike is also great, love that man. And the ending opens up a ton of possibilities and really drives home a lot of the lore.
Excited to see where you go with this! I expect that landing on Arctos will be very interesting.
Bug Repport. (Spoiler)
After the mc touch the glass and hear the endless white, the heartbeat sound goes on forever. Also welcome back dude, we all missed you.
Thanks! I'll take a look to see if I can find what causes the bug- For now, scrolling back (mousewheel up or clicking the "BACK" button a few times) should temporarily fix it.
Yep, same thing happened to me. I ended up loading up a previous save and using the skip function and that fixed it. Almost reported it myself but thought it was probably just dumb luck.
Can't wait to read this release!
Thank you for keeping this project up. It has also helped me in some (important) ways. It is a really good VN with a vibe and mood I crave and can't seem to get it anywhere else, so I am really glad it is still being continued.
Keep up the good work. Love reading your style!
OMG! I saw the notification and felt really happy!
I stayed awake until 5 am reading everything, and I loved every moment of it, specially since the Commander is one of my fav husbandos~ thanks for the update <3
Hey, Gruntsteel, looks like things are back to normal. The VNs are being reindexed, so we're all set as long as no authors use itch.io payments method.

LETS GOOOOO thanks for updating GruntSteel! this week has been awful for us all so seeing something I've been looking forward to as long as this update was a really nice change. I hope things work out and your doing great :)
The content nsfw exist only patreon?
Nope, I don't have patreon - Distant Travels is completely free.
The NSFW content is toggleable inside the game.
Just go into Preferences and toggle it on or off.

Long awaited update is finally here and here I am unable to download it q_q
OMG, best day ever! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That sucks, man. I'm really sorry you're dealing with censorship, especially with something so personal and positive. It's a real bummer when people misunderstand a story and try to shut it down, and it's super unfair because it's hurting a lot of writers.
I'm stoked you found a new team that's helping you get back into it. Going from 20-30 words a day to thousands a week is an amazing turnaround. It's obvious how much this project means to you, and I can't wait to play the new update.
And take care of yourself, GruntSteel. Your story is just a part of you, and there's a lot more to you, so don't sweat the gritty things too much; enjoy this time because, as we all know, time stands for no one.
